Any AI · 1 prompt

Turn a task you repeat into a skill

If you do the same task every week, the same way, stop doing it by hand. A skill is a saved set of instructions with your steps, your format and your examples, and the AI follows it the same way every time. My weekly status report is one, and it gives me back 30 minutes every Friday.

What it's called in each tool

  • Claude calls them Skills, on every plan including Free. Turn on Code execution and file creation under Settings, Capabilities. Your skills live under Customize, Skills. To have it read and post in Slack, use Claude Cowork (paid plans) with the Slack connector.
  • ChatGPT calls them Skills too, but only in Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. On Free, Go, Plus and Pro, use a project: open the project's menu (•••), choose Project settings and paste the instructions in.
  • Copilot calls it an agent. In the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, under Agents, select New agent and describe what you want. Agents built this way can't post to outside apps like Slack.
  1. Pick a task you repeat. Look for the same steps, the same format and the same place it goes every time. A weekly status report has four steps: dig through emails and notes, pull out what got done, write it up for your team, post it in Slack.
  2. Paste the prompt. Fill in the [brackets] with your own sources and channel. In ChatGPT on a personal plan, change the last line to then write it as instructions I can paste into a project. In Copilot, paste it into the new agent's description.
  3. Answer its questions. The prompt asks the AI to interview you, so expect a few questions about sources, timing and tone.
  4. Paste in last week's report. That's how it learns the way you write.
  5. Test it and edit it. It usually needs a couple of rounds. Run it, tell it what to change, run it again.
  6. Every Friday, type run my status report. In ChatGPT, type it inside the project. In Copilot, open the agent first.

Help me build a skill for my weekly status report.

Every week I collect what I finished from my [emails, notes, Slack and Notion], list what's in progress and any blockers, and write it up in this template:

Wins
In progress
Blockers
Next week

Post it in my team Slack channel [#channel name]. Show me the draft before you post it.

Keep it under 250 words and use bullet points as much as possible. Ask me any questions you need, then save it as a skill.

Quick answers

What is a skill in AI?

A skill is a saved set of instructions, with your steps, format and examples, that the AI follows the same way every time. Claude and ChatGPT both call these skills. In Copilot the closest thing is an agent. Skills pay off for tasks you repeat, like a weekly status report.

How do I create a skill in Claude?

Ask Claude to help you build one: describe the task, the steps and the format, and tell it to save the result as a skill. First turn on Code execution and file creation under Settings, Capabilities. Your skills then live under Customize, Skills, where you can turn each one on or off.

Does ChatGPT have skills?

Yes, in ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, where you can ask ChatGPT to create one in a chat. On Free, Go, Plus and Pro there are no skills, so use a project: open its menu, choose Project settings and paste your instructions. They apply to every chat in that project.

Can Copilot do the same thing as a skill?

Yes, Copilot calls it an agent. In the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, under Agents, select New agent and describe what you want in plain words. Access depends on your company's licenses and admin settings. Agents built this way can't take actions in outside apps like Slack without Copilot Studio.

Can AI post my status report to Slack for me?

Claude can, with the Slack connector, which can send messages to channels. Ask it to show you the draft first. ChatGPT's Slack documentation doesn't list posting messages, and Copilot agents built in Agent Builder can't post to Slack, so with those two you copy the report into Slack yourself.

The status report instructions
Name: Weekly status report
Use this when I say "run my status report" or ask for my weekly update.

Steps:
1. Collect what I finished since last [Friday] from [my email, my notes, Slack channel #name, Notion page name]. Only include work I did or owned.
2. List what's in progress and anything blocked. For each blocker, say who or what it's waiting on.
3. Write it in this template, in this order:
   Wins
   In progress
   Blockers
   Next week
4. Rules: under 250 words. One line per bullet. Plain words, no hype. Name people and dates. If a section is empty, write "None this week."
5. Match the tone of the example below.
6. Show me the draft. Post it to [#channel name] only after I say "post it."

If you can't reach one of my sources, tell me which one and carry on with the rest. Don't guess or fill gaps.

Run it every Friday in Claude Cowork

  • Select Scheduled in the left sidebar, then New task, then Create with Claude.
  • Type: Every Friday at [time], run my status report and send me the draft. Claude may ask you a few questions, then shows the task name, the schedule and what it does.
  • Prefer to fill it in yourself? Choose Set up manually and enter the name, the prompt, the approval mode and Weekly.
  • You can edit, pause or run the task any time from the Scheduled page.
  • You do it on a schedule: every Friday, every month end, after every client call.
  • The output always has the same shape: the same headings, the same length, the same place it goes.
  • You keep correcting the AI with the same instructions.
  • You could hand it to a new assistant with one page of notes.
