ChatGPT can read and write your texts

OpenAI added an Apple Messages plugin to the ChatGPT desktop app. It can search your texts, catch you up on a group chat and draft a reply. It sends a text only after you approve it. Here's the setup on a Mac, and the access you're agreeing to.

The steps

Set up Apple Messages in ChatGPT

You need a Mac with Apple silicon and the ChatGPT desktop app. OpenAI lists the plugin on all plans. It works in Work chats and in Codex, and it doesn't work in regular chats.

  1. Send your texts to your Mac. On your iPhone, open Settings, tap Apps, then Messages, then Text Message Forwarding. Turn it on for your Mac.
  2. Bring your history with them. On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, See All and Messages in iCloud. Turn on Use on this iPhone. On your Mac, open Messages, choose Messages > Settings, click iMessage and select Enable Messages in iCloud.
  3. Install the plugin. In the ChatGPT desktop app, select Customize, then Plugins, in the left sidebar. Find Apple Messages and select the plus button. Start a new chat and use the toggle above the message box to switch to Work.
  4. Give it permission. The first time you ask about your texts, ChatGPT asks for the Mac permissions it needs. Expect Full Disk Access, Contacts and Automation. You'll find all three in System Settings, under Privacy & Security. If ChatGPT still can't read your messages, quit it and open it again.

Summarize the family group chat from the last 7 days. What did we decide, and is there anything I need to do?

It asks before it sends

When ChatGPT drafts a text, it shows you the message and who it's going to. Choose Allow once to send that one text. Skip Always allow sending to this chat: it lets ChatGPT text that chat as you with no final check. If the approval never appears, your chat may be set to Full access. Switch it to Ask for approval and try again.

Questions people ask

Quick answers

Can ChatGPT read my text messages?

Yes, on a Mac, through the Apple Messages plugin in the ChatGPT desktop app. It can search your iMessage, SMS and RCS texts, catch you up on a group chat and draft a reply. It works in Work chats and in Codex, and it doesn't work in regular chats, on the web or on your phone.

Can ChatGPT send texts for me?

Yes, and it asks before it sends. ChatGPT shows you the draft and who it's going to, and you choose Allow once to send that one text. Skip Always allow sending to this chat, because it lets ChatGPT text that chat as you with no final check.

How do I connect ChatGPT to Apple Messages?

Install the Apple Messages plugin in the ChatGPT desktop app on a Mac with Apple silicon. Select Customize, then Plugins, in the left sidebar, find Apple Messages and select the plus button. Start a new chat, switch the toggle above the message box to Work, then type @ and choose Apple Messages.

Is it safe to give ChatGPT access to my texts?

It gives ChatGPT a lot of access, so use it only on a personal Mac that only you use. ChatGPT asks for Full Disk Access, which Apple says lets an app read data from Mail, Messages, Safari and Home, plus Time Machine backups. Choose Allow once for every send, and switch the permissions off in System Settings when you're done.

Does the ChatGPT Apple Messages plugin work on iPhone?

No, the plugin runs in the ChatGPT desktop app on a Mac. It isn't in ChatGPT on the web or on your phone, and you can't text ChatGPT through it. Your iPhone texts reach the Mac through Text Message Forwarding, and Messages in iCloud brings your older history along.

Copy these prompts (start each with @ and choose Apple Messages)
1. Find every text from the last 30 days where someone sent me an address, a booking confirmation or a phone number. List who sent it, the date and the exact message.

2. Which chats have I left without a reply in the last 7 days? List each person, their last message and the date.

3. Summarize my texts with [name] since [date]. What did we agree, and what did I say I would do?

4. Find the text where [name] mentioned [topic]. Quote the exact message and give me the date. If you can't find it, say so.

5. Draft a reply to [name]'s last message. Keep it [short and warm]. Show me the draft and don't send it.

Before you turn it on

  • Use a personal Mac that only you use. Full Disk Access reaches far past Messages.
  • On a work Mac, ask your IT team first. Admins on business workspaces can switch the plugin off.
  • Choose Allow once for every send.
  • Keep approval on for any chat where strangers or businesses can text you. OpenAI warns that a chat can contain misleading instructions.
  • Read the quoted message yourself before you act on an address, a time or an amount.

Switch it off when you're done

  1. On your Mac, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security. Turn ChatGPT off under Full Disk Access, Contacts and Automation. Turn them back on the next time you want it.
  2. If you ever chose Always allow sending, open ChatGPT Settings, then Computer use, and select Manage next to Messages. Select the trash icon next to the chat, then Remove.
